Transimeksa embarked on a transformative journey towards sustainability when it introduced Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel to its fleet on March 1st, 2024. In an exclusive interview with the project lead, Thomas Ribalet, Western Europe Business Unit Manager, we gained insight into the motivations, challenges and future prospects of this initiative.
The decision to integrate HVO fuel into Transimeksa’s operations stems from a commitment to environmental responsibility. It aligns with the company’s broader goal of minimizing its environmental impact and transitioning gradually to HVO100.
Why HVO?
While alternative fuels like LNG (Liquid Nitrogen Gas) or electric trucks present viable options, operational constraints such as limited range and infrastructure challenges render them impractical for long-haul transportation, especially for a company like Transimeksa that operates extensively across Europe.
“HVO fuel offers the best compromise between environmental benefits and operational feasibility,” explains Thomas.
Looking ahead, Transimeksa remains committed to exploring alternative options like LNG fuel and electric trucks, driven by evolving client demands and industry trends. However, pragmatic considerations such as operational feasibility and cost-effectiveness dictate the pace of adoption.
Overcoming Challenges and Expanding Horizons
Integrating HVO-fueled trucks into Transimeksa’s operations necessitates addressing logistical and infrastructural challenges. While the company’s fleet is largely compatible with HVO fuel, considerations such as refueling infrastructure pose implementation hurdles.
Measurement of project success and effectiveness relies heavily on data provided by fuel suppliers. Transimeksa has invested substantial time in documenting procedures and liaising with suppliers. One of the significant hurdles encountered during the project was the documentation process and the issuance of transparent certificates for clients, ensuring that the portion of HVO fuel refueled is accurately allocated to specific clients.
“Currently, our plan involves operating HVO-fueled trucks in the Benelux, Germany, Austria and Italy,” reveals Thomas. “We are actively engaging with our fuel suppliers to expand the options for refueling with HVO, thereby broadening the geographic scope of our operations powered by HVO.” However, the availability and cost-effectiveness of HVO fuel currently fluctuate across regions, thereby impacting our operational decisions.
A Sustainable Future
As part of our dedication to sustainability, we have already implemented intermodal solutions, which allow us to save 6000 tonnes of CO2 per year. These solutions are integral to our adherence to CRS regulations, demonstrating our proactive approach to environmental responsibility.
Despite the complexities and uncertainties surrounding alternative fuels, Transimeksa remains steadfast in its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing even more sustainable practices. This journey exemplifies the delicate balance between environmental stewardship and business pragmatism in the transport sector.
